Blackpaw padded drowsily out of the apprentices' den. The she-cat blinked her eyes fully awake, and stretched in the faint light of dawn. The light that filtered through the small cracks in the cave turned her white dapples to gray as she stretched, and sat by the Still Pool. She hated getting her fur wet, but this, Blackpaw just had to try. The black and white apprentice flicked her tail in the water, but as soon as she touched it, she started flicking the small drops of water off. She gazed into the pool. Nothing. Not a ripple. She blinked in amusement, and sat down. Blackpaw gazed at her reflection. A young, black she-cat with white stripes on her neck and a couple white dapples stared back at her, with piercing blue eyes. This wasn't the first time she gazed into the pool just to see the same thing. Her blue eyes never pierced with happiness, or cheer. Anger. Sadness. Depression. Occasionally, she would see triumph. But she mainly saw loneliness. Blackpaw narrowed her eyes and splashed at the reflection, wanted to make it go away. But there were no ripples to destroy the horribble image she saw.
