Toxicstar padded the full way out of camp, flicking her ears back as she was reunited with Cedarclaw. She gave an impatient flick of her ginger-and-black tail; the scent of prey was growing with the warming weather. Birds were chirping, and grass flicked here and there; easy signs of fresh-kill waiting to be caught. Green eyes flicking from bush to bush, the black she-cat found herself looking to the river. In the past, newleaf had brought several different kinds of prey to the river to drink and cool off at the river after a harsh, long leafbare. She padded tentatively towards the rushing water, opening her jaws to draw in scents. A silver flash from the river caught her attention; a swift black paw flashed out, knocking the source to the bank. A silver-scaled fish wiggled on the bank, attempting to make its way back to the water. Toxicstar killed it with a swift bite and took it over to Cedarclaw. "'Even preh lihk vish is eashy to catcsh in newleafsh." she muttered through the slimy skin, shaking her head.

It was a simple task. Follow Toxicstar and hunt with her. So why am I so reluctant to do it? Am I afraid that I will become her friend? If that was the case I would have said no as soon as possible. I would have told her to go away. It bothered him how he was so... afraid? Would that be the correct word? Perhaps, but he wasn't one to judge. Besides, every cat felt fear in their life, but did they fear what he did? He wouldn't want anything to befall Toxicstar if he did become friends with her. STOP. What would befall her? NOTHING. But nothing good came from being friends with him. Oh well. Maybe they would become friends. Best friends, even. The thought was amusing, actually, and Cedarclaw began to wonder how it would feel to have a friend other then Rowanfoot.
Cedarclaw listened to Toxicstar speak with the fish in her mouth and he had to bite down on his lip to keep from laughing. The last thing he wanted was for Toxicstar to think him rude. He couldn't keep silent though, and he ended up giving a small chuckle. "Yes, I suppose. But what if it wasn't? The challange would be fun." He didn't really like fish, but whatever floats her boat. "I prefer mice, to be honest." He gave her a small smile. Turning around he dashed through the brush and opened his jaws. He paused and inhaled. Pleased with what he had smelt, he leaped for the chance. A few moments later he returned with a small wood mouse in his jaws, and he dropped it at his feet. He licked the blood from his paws, and shook his fur. "Wanna share?" He mewed. His voice was guarded, and he was setting himself up for rejection.

Toxicstar flicked her ears in amusement, noting the humor in the reluctant deputy's eyes. She set the fish down gently, eyes glittering. "It was supposed to be funny. Don't be afraid to laugh. I'm probably the most humor-based leader in all the clans."she said, smiling. She watched as he ran off and returned with aa mouse. She narrowed her eyes, thinking. What kind of leader would I be if I ate on a hunting patrol? she thought, taking the warrior code into strong consideration. She shook her head.
"I'm sorry, Cedarclaw. But I can't accept that. The Clan comes first." her tone was still light, but a strong seriousness sparkled within her green gaze.

Cedarclaw nodded, but he still didn't wasn't ready to laugh out loud at any joke she made just yet. "I'm sorry, Cedarclaw, but I can't accept that. The clan comes first." The cedar tom put a strained smile on his face and nodded, looking away. Smoooth. He shook his head and shrugged. "Don't be sorry." He meowed, his voice sounding a little strained. He wouldn't admit it, but that had annoyed him. He turned back to look at his leader, and was embarrassed about how he had just acted - he didn't show it though. After a few heartbeats of awkward silence he shifted his paws and looked at her, willing her to say something. He wasn't the type to start a conversation so quick - but he would gladly partake in one if the circumstances would allow.

Toxicstar shook her head again, realizing that making small talk such as this wasn't helping at all. She padded back just a bit, blinking. "Maybe we should hunt apart for a little while.. just so we can catch more," she suggested. She hated awkward conversations, and was more than determined to end this one. She gave an exxagerated inward sigh, looking at Cedarclaw to see if the deputy agreed with her decision. She felt bad for even suggesting something like this, especially to a cat who did not talk to her that often. Word Count: 101

Cedarclaw smiled. It was certainly tough to make friends nowadays, no? Especially when you offended them. At least Cedar thought he'd offended her. He tilted his head and nodded. His smile vanished as soon as he turned, and he sighed, but padded away from his leader. Wondering what to do, he shrugged and decided to just wait until something came his way. He was pretty bummed out now. A gentle breeze washed through the land as he opened his mouth, and he was happy to realize the scent of mouse. He crept down and followed the scent until he felt he could move enough so he could see what he was stalking. It was a plump mouse, and he smiled in anticipation. Three, two, one, he pounced on the mouse, killing it instantly. He wondered what Toxicstar was doing...

Toxicstar padded quietly away, ears angled back in case Cedarclaw said anything more. She reached a point where the river curved away around a willow tree and angled her ears forward again, determined now to hear and scent any prey. She remember the trout she had buried back where she and Cedarclaw had been and reminded herself to get it later.
The black she cat opened her jaws wide, drawing in the scents; growing things almost overwhelmed her, along with the strong scent of fish from the river, water voles, mice, and birds. She angled her ears back again at the tiny sound of pecking. Tap. She turned towards it. Between her and the wood thrush, a wide patch of grass and fern lay. She crouched and crept forward stealthily towards the bird.
Tap.
She padded farther still, paws flashing silently, one in front of the other, towards the bird.
Tap.
She could see the thrush now; a young one, plump with the freshness of newleaf. It's scent was enticing at the least. Toxicstar couldn't help but feel her mouth watering at the sight of the bird pecking completely unaware at the roots of the tree. She could now hear it clearly.
Tap... tap.. Chirp!
Mouse-dung! the black she-cat thought as she lifted a paw from the bone she had stepped on. The thrush unfolded its wings and began to flap upward frantically, but Toxicstar was faster. She darted out of the ferns and up the tree trunt, claws sinking in the soft bark. She gave a tremendous leap and knocked the thrush out of the sky completely, landing with the bird hanging from her mouth. She smiled at the achievement; she was very proud of that catch. A sudden thought hit her, though, and she padded back to where she had stepped on the thing that had scared the bird.
A bone, just as she had predicted. The hard, white structure was snapped in three parts from where she had stepped on it. She sniffed it curiously-- Fish? Her eyes widened; what had killed and eaten a fish right here, in a fern-shielded clearing?
